The Grey Squirrel

and the fox squirrel are found throughout America. The generic name Sciurus, means "squirrel" in Latin and was derived from two Greek words, "skia" (shadow) and "oura" (tail). Taken literally, the name means "an animal that sits in the shadow of its tail," which both species can do. The tail is a squirrels most distinctive physical feature. It provides while running, jumping, and climbing, and acts as a parachute to break unexpected falls. It supplies warmth in cold weather and shade on sunny days. When flicked rapidly back and forth, the tail acts as a warning signal, or a decoy to distract predators. The gray squirrel is mostly gray with white on its undersides. The fox squirrel has many color phases that vary from silver-gray with a predominantly black head, to solid black, to a light buff or brownish color mixed with reddish yellow. Fox squirrels are larger than grays with some adults exceeding three pounds. Gray squirrels appear more slender-bodied with adults weighing 1-1 ½ pounds. The most important habitat components to provide for gray squirrels are mature, mast-producing hardwoods and large cavity-producing trees. Fox squirrels habitat includes mature, open pine forest having a variety of mast production and cavity development. All squirrels do not travel far from where they build their nests. They are extremely territorial and will spend hours chewing and gnawing to get back to their nests and food supplies. Once they have invaded your home, it is necessary to completely seal and protect your home using the proper materials.

Rats / Mice

Rats/Mice can squeeze their bodies through holes only ¼-inch diameter and are actually smaller than they appear. They are about the same size as a wooden pencil. This fact is of most importance when you consider rodent exclusions on your home of building structure. Rats/Mice can also jump 12 or more inches straight up from one flat surface to another. They are so agile that they can even jump against a flat vertical surface and spring forwards to higher levels. An 8 or more feet jump will not injure Rats/Mice. Because of their size and adaptability, Rats/Mice are the most common of indoor rodents pests. In the Eastern United States, exotic house Rats/Mice are the animals most often found in homes and buildings. Native Rats/Mice (the white-footed Rats/Mice) are the most common rodent pests in the West. Rats/Mice will eat most of the foods that humans and domestic pets eat. Their taste for cereal grains is much preferred. These little animals only require a small amount (1/2 teaspoon) and a 1/5 of water to survive. They are hard to poison because they only nibble at their food in many different feeding stations. Once they taste the poison bait they are unlikely to be attracted to it again so this method of rodent elimination is not effective. Warmth, shelter, food, and water that humans supply strongly attract Rats/Mice into homes. During the summer months, the numbers of Rats/Mice can be astronomical. Then competition for nests begins when cold weather comes rolling in. Rats/Mice will not hesitate to move directly into a warm shelter to nest during the winter. By spring, the Rats/Mice produce their young. This is when rodent invasion in homes becomes much worse. Some animals will begin to remain indoors during the warm months.
